One of r.o.i. Design’s current interior design projects is the expansion and remodel of the Corporate Offices for National Nail in Grand Rapids. Construction on this job is near completion. We have just completed the installation of two custom “N” benches displayed in their main lobby.
National Nail asked us to create a statement piece using their newly rebranded logo, which features an uppercase “N” composed of positive and negative space. Their main lobby has a seating area furnished with new furniture from r.o.i. Design. We created a bench to be a part of the seating arrangement with a back using the “N” shape.
The negative spaces of the “N” are three large “shadow boxes” filled with National Nail’s various fasteners they produce and distribute. Another material featured throughout the remodel is OSB sheathing. We used this as the backer and positive space of the “N”.
Bluewater Studios were the fabricators and installers of this custom statement piece. We have trusted their expertise and attention to detail on several past projects. This one is no exception as we feel it turned out amazing.
Stay tuned for more photos and information about the rest of the National Nail project in the coming months!
r.o.i. Design has enjoyed our relationship with Dr. Ryan Freeland over the last five years as he developed his dermatology practice housed in their incredible building at 1673 Gezon Parkway. His commitment to veterans is evident from his reserved parking spaces, his military holiday celebrations, and his team’s military-patterned scrubs.
We worked on the initial concept with Jon Blair of R2 Design Group and First Companies, then the Phase 2 expansion, and most recently, the Phase 3 expansion that created more clinical, patient, and employee spaces to accommodate their growth.
While Phase 3 added so many needed spaces and followed the brand and direction that makes Wolverine Dermatology so great, the star of the remodel was the new military-themed café break room.
This new break room is large, with seating for 50 people, including bar seating for 16, lounge and dining seating for 34, and access to an exterior patio with outdoor seating for 20. This cafe features some amazing details, including oversized copper pendant lights, yellow banquette seating, extensive use of reclaimed wood at the bar, and a soon-to-be-added actual propeller from a vintage military aircraft.
But most impressive is the display wall that features a flag that Dr. Ryan flew home from his tour in Afghanistan and the oversized custom ribbons that describe the special honors earned by so many.
We salute Dr. Ryan Freeland and his commitment to honoring those who served in our country’s armed forces.
Our long-time friend at BluHouse Properties, Duke Gray, introduced us to Ryan Bassett, President and Wealth Advisor for Evolution Wealth Strategies, who sought to upgrade his newly leased space.
Ryan asked r.o.i. Design to assist in designing the space so that it represented the Evolution Wealth brand and gave customers an experience that delighted them. This redesign included removing walls to achieve a sense of openness while maintaining privacy where necessary.
Inspired by the fresh feel of the company’s logo, we created a setting that includes a neutral color palette with wood features and touches of the corporate colors. Eliminating the dated oak trim throughout the space brought the office into this decade in look and feel.
r.o.i. Design assisted Ryan in selecting furnishings and accessories. Thanks to Design Lead Marianne Martz, the project was managed to the end in spite of the challenges presented by COVID-19.
We met Mike and Lisa Mervenne through an introduction by West Michigan Office Interiors. They are the owners of Burco, Inc., an amazing company that supplies automotive mirrors for new and after-market. This multi-generation business is an entrepreneurial inspiration. It’s reflective of the business creativity in West Michigan, but more specifically of their corporation.
Our year-long relationship of designing and budgeting resulted in a great remodel thanks to Erhardt Construction and Joe Kuhn. The project was completed early this year.
The remodel included more open office areas, an expanded break room, more efficient office layouts, and branded décor. Building on their amazing brand, r.o.i. Design developed an interior design scheme that reflects their brand colors, culture, and needs.
In addition to interior design, we were able to provide graphic design for custom branded décor, as well as providing new furnishings for their break room.
In January, Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse opened its fourth location
in the exciting new Studio Park development in downtown Grand Rapids. Anna
Baeten, Executive Director, and Michele Bookie, Operations Manager, see this
new location as the opportunity to align the look of their facility with their
updated clean brand that’s on their website and marketing.
“It was time to become clear with our brand; we are intentional
and simple in our approach. We believe in Growth through Practice. We want our
spaces to reflect our values: Respect, Integrity, Intentionality, Caring, Honesty, and Humility,”
says Baeten.
With that
direction in mind, r.o.i. Design assisted in developing an interior that
minimized their previous scheme of tropical fruit colors to a neutral palette
of black, white, gray, cork, and wood. With touches of greenery and a focus on
cleanability, there was still room for some “funk”.
A variety of shapes of wood shade lamps hang in the lobby. The desk and retail area are built from reclaimed pallet wood from Grand Rapids Pallets. Their diamond logo is featured in the tectum acoustical panels applied to the yoga studio’s ceiling. Indirect lighting was added to the waiting area as well as the studio.
We thank our
collaborators Jon Blair from r2Design for architecture, First Companies for
construction, and Ken Kearney for specialty millwork build-out.

Doctors Daniel Bolt and Thomas Bouwens had outgrown their existing Holland, Michigan office. With the help of Dixon Architecture and T2 Construction, they agreed to design a new building. r.o.i. Design was invited to the project by Ken Dixon, and we set out to create a space that met the needs of both doctors and patients.
When r.o.i Design learned that, between patients and family members, the practice could see up to 500 people a day, we began to understand their energetic approach to dental care. We also learned that they wanted to remain a “kid and family-friendly” environment yet avoid a theme-park-like feel.
Many pediatric dentists overlook the opportunity to create a calming and comfortable space for busy families. With these factors in mind, our goal was to take their West Michigan caring brand forward, which meant keeping a more “Montessori-approach”. This calming approach intentionally included a plan to create smaller, focused areas of interest for young patients. r.o.i. Design happily developed the interior design, lighting design, and furnishing finishes for the new location.
In addition to the interior finishes, we assisted in introducing the practice to an experienced Lionel train expert, who designed the new miniature train that winds throughout the space on a raised track.
We also designed their new logo and provided many of the key furnishings.
Some of our favorite details include:
Decorative acrylic at the reception and checkout desks
Dark blue board and batten wall treatments
Accent carpet and painted wall “stripes”
Fun light fixtures throughout the space
Acoustic wall panels in the open exam area
Lit ceiling details at the checkout
We are grateful for the opportunity to work on this project and wish West Michigan Pediatric Dentistry the best as they settle into their new space, which opened on February 3, 2020.
