Sun Rise Ministries
Jenison, MI

Sun Rise Ministries purchased the former Freedom Chapel in Jenison, MI. They engaged BCI Construction and TJA Architecture to remodel the facility. Having worked with both Doug Kooistra of BCI and Tim Allspach of TJA on other projects, it was great to join the team as the interior designers.

For Sun Rise, their commitment to help people Connect and Serve meant their new church home needed to be immediately “engaging”, welcoming visitors to participate.

It is amazing what some well-placed paint, carpet and graphics can do to a space. We integrated the acoustical panels in the worship area to create a wall design. We were also able to offer graphic design services, creating wall graphics and signage in the corridors.

Mars Hill Kids
Mars Hill Bible Church
Grandville, MI

New leadership, new energy and new direction at Mars Hill created a desire to update their facility’s 38,000 square feet children’s ministry. More than 500 children from infants through 10-year-olds attend the ministry each Sunday. Their nursery, preschool and elementary school spaces needed refreshing. This meant new flooring, new paint, updated lighting and new cabinetry, as well as any needed repairs.
The redesign was intended to simplify, warm and organize the spaces to help member families entrust their children to Mars Hill. r.o.i. Design saw the journey, discovery and comfort of the spaces as key to the success of the redesign. Mars Hill will also be adding their own graphic and signage design as well as decorative elements to complete the look and feel.
Mars Hill had a budget, based on generous donations and operational planning, but it wasn’t clear if they could make the needed changes within their budget or schedule. r.o.i Design worked with the leadership to solicit contractors who were members or affiliates of Mars Hill, as well as call in other sympathetic trades to make the remodel possible to meet the goals.

Macon Charter Academy

Culturally, this school wanted to embrace a global diversity and to make sure the interior could appeal to wide variety of students and families.

Our favorite details here was the use of colors that we described as global cuisine, colors that naturally resonated with people as rich and flavorful: Eggplant, Saffron, Palm and Tomato. Then we used those colors in classic patterns in flooring and walls. Those patterns could be traced back to civilization 2000 years ago and could be seen just as decoration, or teaching tools.

Through the course of the design we were informed that James Brown went to school in Macon, GA so we wanted to make sure everyone would “feel good”! This project was a design-build project lead by Triangle Inc. in Grand Rapids, MI. Robert Doornbos was engaged as architect.

LifeStream Church
Allendale, MI

r.o.i. Design worked with the leadership of LifeStream, a Wesleyan Church, as they developed a plan to remodel the vacated Allendale Middle School into their church home.
LifeStream was renting a local high school auditorium and with the increase of population and opportunities in the greater Allendale area, they had a vision for growth and community service.
r.o.i. Design engaged Elevate Studios as architects, and a volunteer contractor organized professional and volunteer labor to execute the remodel.
Significant to the design was the conversion of the gym to the worship center; r.o.i. Design developed all finishes, lighting plans and specs as well as designed the acoustic wall panel design.
The youth and children’s areas received special details based on the age and function of the ministries.
Entries and corridors often hold exhibits and messaging and it was important that those spaces be well lit and designed along with all the other spaces.
r.o.i. Design has designed many religious facilities and, in all cases, it’s important that the character of the congregation is reflected in the design. For LifeStream church that meant their facility had to be welcoming to multi-generations, and r.o.i. Design work diligently to help create the comfort they desired.
