r.o.i. Design was introduced to The Derm Institute of West Michigan through First Companies, and we were pleased to be awarded the interior design of the new facility. Working with architect Jon Blair of R2Design Group and the team at First Companies, the office opened its doors in April of 2021. For the year prior, Dr. Hawley had rented space nearby and developed a growing clientele. She had outgrown that space by the time of the move.

The inspiration for the interiors came from their logo’s overlapping circles, suggesting the variety of care the practice offers and the pattern itself. The radius theme was applied to the check-in/check-out desk, presenting a gentle approach with multiple points of engagement. The pattern of the circles was also developed into laser-cut screens that were used as dividers in the lobby and backlit ceiling panels in the corridor. A wallpaper that had the same pattern was used at the front desk. The color palette is simple, crisp but warm. Most of the flooring throughout is a warm luxury vinyl tile. Other areas are carpeted in organic patterns to add to the spa-like feel.

We also procured furnishings for the non-medical spaces, creating a hospitality feel in the patient waiting areas.

Wolverine Dermatology – Expansion

Wyoming, MI 49519

Four years ago, First Companies introduced us to Dr. Ryan Freeland as he was planning his practice, Wolverine Dermatology. It was clear from the start that he intended to grow his practice by bringing aboard new doctors and offering a greater range of services.

Anticipating this expansion of services, an unfinished portion of the building was built-out to create four additional exam rooms, a doctor’s office, and a med-team open office. Maintaining the finishes from our original design, we planned and documented finishes for the expanded space.

We also provided the custom Med Team Desk, a “landing pad” for information that includes electrical and data accessories, allowing the busy open office area to operate efficiently.

And of course, like before, the Maize and Blue were honored throughout.

Doctors Meghan Condit and Christine Vollmar have a heart for kids, and as mothers themselves, they understand the importance of personalized care. That focus and vision was a key ingredient in their decision to establish Grand River Pediatric Dentistry.

Newly opened in February, Meghan and Christine are celebrating a more-than-two-year journey in planning, and they couldn’t be happier with their new home in Jenison.

r.o.i. Design was introduced to Grand River Pediatric Dentistry by Todd Schaal of Estes Group. We worked with them to create a friendly and calming environment that includes touches of kid-like whimsy while remaining a total reflection of their brand. Once again, we joined the design team that included First Companies and Dixon Architecture.

Jenison is close to the Grand River, a symbol of local pride in the Greater Grand Rapids Area, and drawing from the river imagery, the interior of the new space is dappled with blues and sandy neutrals. Borrowing from West Michigan cottages, r.o.i. Design included shiplap and beams in the space. Additionally, we selected and provided lobby furniture that boasted patterns and shapes that support the sailboat theme of their logo. Like other pediatric spaces, we relied on large ottomans as benches to provide a mobile and kid-friendly seating option.

Many pediatric dentists overlook the opportunity to create a calming and comfortable space for busy families. With these factors in mind, our goal was to take the West Michigan Pediatric Dentistry caring brand forward, which meant keeping a more “Montessori-approach”. This calming approach intentionally included a plan to create smaller, focused areas of interest for young patients. r.o.i. Design happily developed the interior design, lighting design, and furnishing finishes for the new location.

In addition to the interior finishes, we assisted in introducing the practice to an experienced Lionel train expert, who designed the new miniature train that winds throughout the space on a raised track.

We also designed their new logo and provided many of the key furnishings.

Some of our favorite details include:

  • Decorative acrylic at the reception and checkout desks
  • Dark blue board and batten wall treatments
  • Accent carpet and painted wall “stripes”
  • Fun light fixtures throughout the space
  • Acoustic wall panels in the open exam area
  • Lit ceiling details at the checkout

We are grateful for the opportunity to work on this project and wish West Michigan Pediatric Dentistry the best as they settle into their new space, which opened on February 3, 2020.

Grandville, MI 49418

What was once the Kobe Japanese Steakhouse at 3434 Rivertown Point Court in Grandville, is now the new home of West Michigan Dermatology.  The 13,000-square-foot space underwent a huge transformation from restaurant to medical office facility that includes a private waiting area for their patients, a MOHS surgical center, a skin revitalizing center, modern exam rooms, and administrative space. First Companies, the contractor, also added additional square footage to the building to accommodate a pathology lab, a call center, surgical open office space, and a break room.

Customer care is at the forefront for West Michigan Dermatology, so the customer greeting and check-in spaces were scrutinized. The waiting areas are generous and in clear view of the reception area. The inspiration for the design came from a lakefront cottage, where the colors are calming and natural; a palette of blue, aqua, gray, cream and white.

A couple of favorite details include:

  • The lobby carpet, whose pattern is a reminiscence of the water to sand patterns you see at the beach.
  • The entry faux skylight that filters the light from the “tower” into the space.
  • The beams and millwork details at entry and reception.
  • The wall covering in the Skin Revitalizing waiting room.
  • The MOHS waiting room seating collection.

On this project, we also designed a custom desk for the open office surgical team that has two heights and offers a convenient way for the providers to work with the medical team.
