With a dynamic young president and a focus on innovation, and a business plan to grow operations, West Michigan Compounding needed to expand their offices. Wolverine Building Group reached out to r.o.i. Design for interior design services for this office expansion, which more than doubled the office space, added break-out space and new restrooms.

Ashley Everin, Vice President of West Michigan Compounding, wanted the new office to have a clean, loft look with open ceilings, concrete floors, glass office walls, a touch of reclaimed wood, and new office systems.

In addition to interior finishes, r.o.i. Design assisted them in finding an office furniture supplier who could provide “the look” they wanted. West Michigan Office Interiors was one of four groups we reached out to, and West Michigan Compounding chose to work with them to create a great open office.

Hutchinson Engineering Offices

460 Fuller Ave NE
Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Building on the success of the 616 Fab House where r.o.i. Design created an innovation center that met international acceptance, Hutchinson Antivibration Systems engaged us to design the expansion of their engineering, plant operations and purchasing offices at their Grand Rapids location. They trusted that we understood their business goals and criteria.

Hutchinson’s growing success as an OEM provider of parts and solutions for transportation brands meant that they needed to create competitive working environments to attract and maintain talent. The total renovation was around 16,000 square feet. This project converted 6,500 square feet of existing warehouse space to office space.

While historic building conversions are not new to r.o.i. Design, every old building introduces challenges. This conversion included creating a space with a raised platform over an industrial space. What may have seemed like a problem actually created a very desirable working space.

Hastings Fiberglass

Hastings Fiberglass

Hastings Fiberglass
Hastings, MI

The Baum family has made Hastings Fiberglass a success for more than 50 years. That success is based on their innovation, customer care and their commitment to their community. But their ability to grow was limited based on their physical plant, so in 2016 they started to plan for a new headquarters and a state-of-the-art plant.
Wolverine Building Groups’ Brandon Hartel called r.o.i. Design to help with the interior design of this 100,000 SF, 8M project. He said that they needed “the r.o.i. Design touch”. Working with Wolverine and Hastings Fiberglass’ President Dave Baum and Earlene Baum, we worked through the decisions for the finishes of their offices as well as the plant.
Some of our favorite results include the open staircase from the lobby to the second-floor offices, the break room/lunch room and the colors in the manufacturing space. Baum admitted he thought we were “a little nutty” putting all those colors in the plant, but he is so glad we did.

Advantage Label

Advantage Label

Advantage Label & Packaging
Grand Rapids, MI

Advantage Label says they “label with a purpose”. They work with their customers to create labels and packaging that present a quality product and promote sales. r.o.i. Design’s experience of Advantage Label was just that, they perform with purpose and wanted their office to show them as a place of quality, efficiency and pride.

Wolverine Building Group contacted r.o.i. Design to support their design process and we were asked to review lighting plans, select finishes and lighting, and help make the break room more of a restaurant than a cafeteria.

Using the red of their logo colors (which was also an accent color on the exterior of the building), r.o.i. Design added charcoals, blue gray and orange to the overall scheme to create depth and variety. The use of planked modular carpet tiles allowed accent colors to be introduced within a consistent field of carpet, without added costs.

Dooge Veneers

Dooge Veneers

Dooge Veneers
Grand Rapids, MI

Dooge Veneer has remodeled and expanded their space over a decade.

The scope of the 2009 remodel included rethinking the showroom by creating more than one customer friendly space. The entry reception area had to complement their customer’s high-end designs using their veneers.

Their education area didn’t have many walls, so millwork had to be designed to provide a place for “show and tell”. Their sample and veneer inspection area that was formerly thought of as “back of house” was now part of the customer experience and brought up to their expectation with lighting and finishes. In addition to the public areas of the space, the private and open office areas were upgraded with new finishes and lighting.

To address the need for more office space and a more flexible showroom, Dooge remodeled part of their warehouse to create a large sample space, a large conference room and open office environment in 2017

They were also hoping they could avoid putting a ceiling into the “warehouse” space, but rather find a way to create a more urban loft appearance exposing the ceiling structure and mechanical.

Key to the design was the creation of custom “office cubicles” that brought people together in an open office environment in custom millwork offices that showed off their veneers. The new “cubicles” use matched “rustic random” walnut veneer, recut walnut veneer and stainless-steel trim.

The new conference room allows for larger meetings while also creating a beautiful back drop to the open office with their new logo on a glass wall. Inside the conference room, r.o.i. designed inset panels in the drywall with FC Sapele wood and stainless-steel trim.

This project, like so many recently, we also assist in the actual execution of the remodel, offering select project management services.
