Pennell CPA Expands to New Office

Pennell CPA Expands to New Office

Fred Pennell of Pennell CPA reached out to us to inquire about our ability to help them plan and execute a move to a new building. We had worked with their landlord previously, and Pennell’s review of our portfolio led them to select us as the group to manage the design-build process for them. As a team, we looked at two or three building sites and reviewed the feasibility of each. When they discovered a property on Cascade Road offering both adequate room for them and additional space to lease, they had found their new home.

We engaged Tim Allspach of TJA Architects to review code and structural issues, and we interviewed contractors and engaged Pinnacle Construction for the build-out.

Pennell CPA was experiencing rapid growth, and they needed space to house a growing workforce and a space that appealed to new hires. More importantly, they could benefit from more meeting rooms and collaboration spaces. In addition to space, they were committing to core values and a brand that they wanted to be reflected in their office.

The design-build process through COVID had been extended, but we are very pleased with what Pennell describes as a warm, open, and functional space.

A few details we are proud of include the wood wall in the lobby, the creative carpet patterns, the lighting plan and lighting fixtures, the break room ceiling details, and the furnishings.

As their motto states, “Everything is Awesome” at Pennell CPA!

Wellspring Church Reinvents Their Youth and Staff Spaces

Wellspring Church Reinvents Their Youth and Staff Spaces

Steve Fridsma, our friend at Elevate Studio, introduced us to Dan Bolkema, Executive Director, and Tanya Bolkema of Wellspring Church who was redesigning several spaces within their facility. They were looking for our help with interior finish selections, lighting design, and selections of furnishings for youth ministry areas and staff offices.

They have a strong young adult program, attracting visitors from regional colleges and their community is multi-generational with a large children’s program. This remodel was intended to create needed improvements to support these programs.

Dan’s background in the construction industry led to great insight into the feasibility and he offered the “can-do” spirit for creative details. His and Tanya’s interest and understanding of colors and materials made this a fun project for r.o.i. Design.

This vibrant destination community in Hudsonville Michigan has opened its doors carefully during COVID and the remodel was recently completed. r.o.i. Design was happy to supply a variety of contract furnishings to complete the look.

DLN Integrated Systems’ New Corporate Offices and Manufacturing Plant

DLN Integrated Systems’ New Corporate Offices and Manufacturing Plant

DLN Integrated Systems was introduced to r.o.i. Design through First Companies along with architect Ken Dixon of Dixon Architecture.

DLN’s growth is a result of their commitment to their customers, creating customized solutions for material handling and automation.  That commitment and attitude was also seen through their process of interior design of their offices: clear, consistent, simple, and innovative.

r.o.i. Design worked with DLN to select interior finishes and to make recommendations for lighting design and lighting fixtures. We teamed up with their furniture providers to coordinate plans and finishes.

The result is a space that is industrial yet engaging with the use of wood and warm colors. We are the proudest of our influence on the lighting design and selection and design of the wood walls.

100 Grandville Improves Their Lobby

100 Grandville Improves Their Lobby

Long-time friends and business professionals Hillary and Doug Taatjes of NAI Wisinski of West Michigan contacted r.o.i. Design regarding the building lobby of their corporate office. It’s located at 100 Grandville Ave. in downtown Grand Rapids.

In 2018, we carried out the first phase of this conversion by painting wood panels, changing out light fixtures, and lightening up the space overall. We have helped several of NAI’s clients with lobby upgrades in order to attract new tenants and keep current ones happy by adding new furnishings. The Taatjes’ saw the opportunity to update 100 Grandville with similar goals in mind.

Our clients sought to make the existing lobby feel less like a mechanical room. The existing series of panels in the lobby that monitored the elevator, as well as other electrical panels, needed to remain accessible. We presented options for covering the panels and made recommendations for furnishings to complete the upgrade.

The final product resulted in hanging dimensional panels that could be manipulated with window covering hardware to allow the wall to open up. With the addition of a rug, bar table with stools, and foliage accents – voila! – no more mechanical room.

Wolverine Dermatology Expands Their Practice

Wolverine Dermatology Expands Their Practice

Four years ago, First Companies introduced us to Dr. Ryan Freeland as he was planning his practice, Wolverine Dermatology. It was clear from the start that he intended to grow his practice by bringing aboard new doctors and offering a greater range of services.

Anticipating this expansion of services, an unfinished portion of the building was built-out to create four additional exam rooms, a doctor’s office, and a med-team open office. Maintaining the finishes from our original design, we planned and documented finishes for the expanded space.

We also provided the custom Med Team Desk, a “landing pad” for information that includes electrical and data accessories, allowing the busy open office area to operate efficiently.

And of course, like before, the Maize and Blue were honored throughout.

Introducing the Med Teams Desk

Introducing the Med Teams Desk

Modern medical and surgical environments are recognizing the value of open team areas where physicians and providers huddle to exchange information, order meds, and supplies and update charts before returning to patients. This reduces the need for more offices and facilitates greater communication.

r.o.i. Design has designed many of these open team areas and, eventually, we created a custom desk to fit the needs of these spaces. Working with qualified media furniture makers in Michigan, we have engineered this desk and are now making it available throughout the state.

The desk is a custom product and can be sized to fit your office. Several standard features are included:

  • Two fixed-height surfaces, seated and standing
  • Built-in data, power, and USB receptacles
  • Complete wire management
  • Powder-coated legs and hardware
  • Standard laminates available for top and front panels
  • Top edges are finished with PVC and radius corners
  • Optional, removable partitions to mitigate the spread of bacteria and viruses while working in close quarters
  • Up to 144” in length

Prices start at $3,500, depending on size, power accessories, and installation conditions. (taxes excluded). We will custom design your desks for free, including coordinating power accessories with your technical needs.
