Before there was Trader Joe’s there was G.B. Russo & Son, a Grand Rapids specialty grocery store started in 1905 by Italian immigrants in a downtown Grand Rapids location. Third generation owners in their third location recognized that national food retailers were going to eventually compete in their market and they needed to get “ahead of the game”.

In 2005, Wolverine Building Group contacted r.o.i. Design, as encouraged by the Russo family, to design their remodeled expansion at the southeast Grand Rapids “warehouse” store.

r.o.i. Design created the concept for the exterior and worked with the family on store layout and finishes.

The store had to be all “G.B. Russo & Son”, a brand that will be recognized for the next 100 years.
